§ Phase 3 — finishing (continued.)

It’s been quite awhile since the last update, for which I apologize. In that time, the interior trim has been completed to the degree it’s going to be. I had wanted to do more. In some glittering future, I may, but for now it’s adequate. Here’s the chair rail. Dad and I routed this ourselves from more of the floor-oak.

...and here is a wheel-well, all capped. It also shows the baseboard molding. I wanted it kind of simple to match the routs in the arches. Call it tastefully reserved (and simple to do.) Pardon the dust;

Naturally, the finish nails will need to be set in and puttied over. I’m leaving that for now as a non-critical job.

Once the wheel wells were finished, it became possible to alter my usual camp-bed to fit the space. Between the tongues and the sleeping surface I was able to sacrifice 8 inches of width, allowing plenty of space alongside the bed to actually maneuver, and eventually place a small nightstand/cabinet.

The angles in this picture seem a little odd, but it’s just the camera. The bed is pretty level with its new, shorter leg.

Later in the afternoon, KH dropped by to assist with the strange hardware modifications that had to be done to make the latches work with the lock mechanism. Here we see him fiddling with it in front of the partially stained new door. It’s not really arched - it’s merely a cunning façade.

That hinge arrangement is not final. It will be far more decorative. The whole thing absolutely requires that many hinges, however. I swear it weighs 200lb. This is where dad’s long house building experience really shone, however. The whole thing swings open as smoothly as a bank vault.

Here we see KH fiddling further with the latch mechanism;

...and here we see dad dressing up the main window frame with a sander and some caulk, and asking to be photographed and put into this blog. I doubt he expected me to be taking his picture as he was actually asking me to. Careful what you wish for.

Further updates will happen after the exterior paint job.

Six days until phase 4. I feel as if I’ve already been through about 8 consecutive Pennsics. Still, the work must continue. Thankfully, I had a TON of help this past weekend. Morgan and occasionally Wynn have been helping with the paint job since last week. Saturday and Sunday, Lara and Jas and the whole family came out from Remsen and did a TON of painting. Dad even stayed home from a car show on Sunday to help get the door completely finished. The exterior is almost totally done except for a few tiny details. Here’s what it looks like;
